A2 / Restricted Motorcycle Test

The A2, or RESTRICTED MOTORCYCLE TEST is taken on a minimum 245cc machine producing between 20 and 35Kw (47bhp) and approved by the DVSA for test purposes.

On completion of the A2 Restricted test, the rider will have a full motorcycle licence and can take off their L Plates, carry a passenger and ride on motorways. The rider however will be restricted to riding a machine of no more than 35Kw (47bhp). This is roughly the power of an unrestricted 250cc machine.

The requirements to complete the A2 Restricted Licence Course are;

  • Over 19 years of age
  • Hold a valid UK driving licence with Category A (motorcycle entitlement)
  • A current CBT certificate
  • A Written Theory test pass certificate (This should be obtained before the start of the course)

The length of course and price vary depending on riding experience, so we offer a range of options from one day preparation for test to the A2 Package which supplies as much training as required to reach test standard.

Direct Access Scheme (DAS)

The DIRECT ACCESS SCHEME (DAS) course is usually taken on a 600cc machine or larger.

On successful completion of the DAS test, the rider will have a full, unlimited motorcycle licence and can take off their L Plates, carry a passenger and ride on the motorway. There is no restriction and the licence is effective immediately.

The requirements to complete the DAS Course are;

  • Over 24 years of age
  • Hold a valid UK driving licence with Category A (motorcycle entitlement)
  • A current CBT certificate
  • A Written Theory test pass certificate (This should be obtained before the start of the course)

The length of course and price vary depending on riding experience, so we offer a range of options from one day preparation for test to the DAS Package which supplies as much training as required to reach test standard.

Training per day – £180 using a school bike

The daily rate is suitable for riders who have gained road experience on their own machines and need to prepare for the practical test. Come and have a free A2 assessment with one of our instructors to assess the length of course you require.  Our instructors can include visits to the test centre and practice on the test routes in the day’s training.

Full A2 & DAS Package – £810 including Module 1 & 2 test fees

The A2 & DAS Package provides 3 days of training, with a 4th day for the Module 1 and Module 2 tests.

Course Day One – With the CBT under your belt you will now start to work on a greater level of skill on your bike and this includes Roadcraft, Theory, Bike Familiarisation and of course more on road training with the emphasis on getting the best out of the motorcycle. During this day you will usually convert to a 650cc machine for the remainder of the course.

Course Day Two – Day two of the course includes a recap of Day 1, more on road practice and further development of Road Craft skills. The skills required for the Module 1 test will also be practiced. On this day you will spend time in Burgess Hill as this is the test location we often use so that you can get to know the test routes which are likely to be used for your test.

Course Day Three – Module 1 Practical Test Preparation – Our instructor will take you through some warm up practice before running through all the excerises required for the Module 1 test.  This test includes a number of manouveres that you will practice and be able to talk through before your instructor takes you to the test centre.

Course Day Four – Module 1 & 2 Practical Tests – The Module 1 test is conducted at the Burgess Hill test centre. Once the Module 1 test has been successfuly completed we can present you for the Module 2 test. We occasionally use the Tunbridge Wells test centre if Burgess Hill is unavailable. The Module 2 test can only be taken on successful completion of Module 1. Where possible, we will try to book Module 2 for later that day or the next day but this is all subject to the availability of exam slots.

The Module 2 Practical test consists of a 35 minute road ride with an examiner following you on a motorbike or possibly in a car. You will be in radio communication with them and you will be asked to follow their instructions while your skills are assessed. On return to the test centre you will then be debriefed by the examiner and informed if you have passed or not.

In the event of a rider not passing the test we will sit down and plan the best course of action and sometimes it is just a matter of rebooking a test slot, on other occasions we may need to work on a paticular area of your riding. We can talk through these options and agree the best way forward. Any additional training will be charged at the daily rate as required plus the test fees.

Testimonials

Bike smart have been a fantastic company to train with!
After completing my restricted Mod 2 with them a few years ago, today I completed my full DAS course. Luke, the instructor I had for the weekend, was helpful, knowledgeable and most importantly funny. This helped me mentally prepare as it set a relaxed tone for what can be a stressful few days of build up.
I cannot more highly recommend their services for anyone looking to get on two wheels for the first time or to refresh and upgrade licenses.

My name is Biniyamin and I recently completed my CBT training with Bike Smart, and I had a great experience. Ed and Adrian were fantastic trainers—knowledgeable, patient, and approachable. They explained everything clearly and ensured I felt confident at each step. The whole process was well-organized and thorough, making me feel safe and ready for the road. Highly recommend Bike Smart for anyone looking to get their CBT!

I, SĪREN MUSIC

Did my CBT with Bike smart would highly recommend..then went on to DAS training which was very intense however having a calm, safe and professional instructor such as Adrian made the experience far more enjoyable. Not only does he observe students and cater to their individual learning styles his dedication to riding, teaching and keeping students safe is by far second to none.

I recently did my cbt with these guys and I could not recommend them enough!, I had Ed and John instructing and they are both friendly and professional.
Being a fairly nervous individual coupled with the fact I've never ridden a motorcycle before that day both the guys are easy going and made the day a memorable experience.
Very highly recommended!!

I completed the DAS with BikeSmart in Aug 2023, from day 1 my instructor Luke was clear with his communication and the training. He put me through my paces and tested my abilities. Once I was up to speed, he increased the difficulty whilst still being supportive and patient.
I would thoroughly recommend!

Hal Foster
